Retailer to Watch: Alison Barnard, Injeanius, Boston

Opened in July 2005, in-jean-ius is arguably Boston’s best women’s jeans boutique. Stocking more than 30 brands, the store is owned by Alison Barnard, who tells us what is selling best there and what she expects to be flying off the shelves next season.

“Best-selling brands and styles at the store are J Brand’s Houlihan Cargo pants: the non-denim category has been increasingly popular and serves as a great alternative to denim.  Thanks to the military style trend this season, fashionistas from Hollywood to NYC have been spotted sporting this ultra-popular Houlihan pant, which combines the rugged look of cargos with tough ankle zips and the fit of a skinny jean. Skinny jeans and jeggings continue to dominate our shelves. Popular brands include Citizens of Humanity’s jegging, J brand’s 811 mid rise cigarette and Hudson’s jegging. Straight leg jeans or slim boot cuts are quickly surpassing boot cut as the most popular cut. This style is sleek and sophisticated not to mention any body type can wear them. Key sellers here are Joe’s Honey Straight Leg, Paige’s Skinny Boot Cut, AG’s Ballad slim boot.

Non-denim will continue through spring and it will be stronger than ever. High-waisted flares paired with chucky wedges are infinitely flattering and make every girl’s legs look long and lean! Super wide legs are making a comeback but since change is hard for consumers I expect the popularity of skinny jeans to continue. They have become a style staple in most women’s wardrobes.

I wish that I had better news to report, unfortunately consumers are very selective about their purchases. They have a ‘buy now, wear now’ attitude and they are putting a lot of thought into their purchases. I am seeing a lot of customers who need to walk away and think about it before they buy.

My favorite new item are the Bleulab’s Reversible Jeans: two jeans in one! You can't go wrong with these skinny jeans from Bleulab, colored black on one side and a dark blue tone on the other. Not only are they economical, but they make it easy to go from day to night in just a quick switch!"
